If your iPod shuffle is not getting recognized by Tunes on your Windows or Mac computer, then you will not be able to update the firmware and add songs onto its memory. If you notice sometimes that the light flashes, then becomes solid, its showing an sign that the software is picking up the device, but its not appearing. You also need to make sure that you are using an original charging cable, as fakes have bad solder connections and eventually become problematic.
1) Power off your computer shutting down the operating system.
2) Connect a USB cable and connect the iPod shuffle to a different USB port.
3) You will need to perform a soft reset to your iPod shuffle. This is really easy, all you do is slide the power switch in the off position for 5 seconds. Then slide it back in the other direction to power it on.
4) Switch on your computer. When it launches on the homescreen, it should say that its installing the USB driver automatically and will now be showing as identified.
